Good news - this is now possible with the new
"Add label(s) with AI" rule action in Missive 11.17.0!
You can create a single rule that automatically categorizes all incoming emails into labels like Newsletters, Receipts, Social, Priority, etc. The AI reads each email and applies the appropriate label based on your label descriptions.
What makes it flexible:
• You define your own categories. Create whatever labels make sense for your workflow (not limited to preset categories like Gmail)
• Label descriptions guide the AI. Add descriptions like "Automated newsletters and marketing emails" or "Order confirmations and receipts" to help the AI categorize accurately
• Single or multiple labels. Choose to apply the single best match, or let AI apply all matching labels
• Custom prompts. Add instructions like "If unsure, apply the 'Review' label" or "Prioritize emails from contacts over unknown senders"
• Combine with other actions. Once labeled, you can chain additional rules to auto-archive newsletters, flag priority emails, or move receipts to a specific mailbox
To set it up: Settings → Rules → New rule → Incoming email → Add action "Add label(s) with AI" → Select your category labels.

Philippe Lehoux Just to be clear before implementing this... this does or does not allow for OpenAI training on the emails that it reads for categorizing. I'm assuming that it does?

Spark absolutely dominates with this feature. I am struggling in my transition to missive because if this feature lack lol, I keep opening spark and feeling this longing feeling for my priority emails category that stays pinned at the top of my inbox.

I love Missive but the one thing it has not helped with at all is email overload. I just tried Spark and it was so awesome to instantly have 95% of the noise filtered out. Can't wait to see this in Missive. Hopefully with a way to manually correct for any misidentifications.

Sorting emails into 3 distinct sections:
(a) inbox (important stuff you need immediately),
(b) the feed (newsletters and things you may read occassionally)
(c) paper trail (receipts and records that you rarely need)

Philippe Lehoux: Great. I personally disliked "focused" inboxes, because the machine usually gets it wrong for me when deciding what's important to me and what's not. However I like the idea of "focused" notifications so I only get notifications for important/personal emails. I can tolerate some mistaken notifications, in order to reduce the overall quantity.
