I’d like to suggest an improvement to how Missive displays on tablets – in my case, this refers specifically to the iPad Air (5th gen), but it likely applies to similar devices as well.
Currently, Missive’s interface is made up of three primary sections (plus the action bar on the right side):
• The sidebar
• The message list
• The message viewer
On tablets in portrait mode, only the message list and message viewer are shown, with the sidebar hidden. However, even with the sidebar hidden, the message viewer feels very cramped on this screen size. In contrast, the mobile version feels much more spacious and usable, likely because it shows only one section at a time.
From a UX perspective, it would make more sense to also hide the message list in portrait mode on tablets. This would give the message viewer more space and make the interface much cleaner and easier to use.
In landscape mode, all three sections are currently visible – just like on desktop. Here as well, I’d recommend hiding the sidebar so that only the message list and message viewer are shown. This would simplify the layout and improve readability and focus.
As an additional idea – maybe this behavior could be made optional in the settings, similarly to how swipe actions can be customized.
I think this change would really improve the overall tablet experience. Curious to hear what others think!
