The way Front App manages this is much better
Labels in gmail / front are the same. 
Not having colour coding on the gmail labels makes them not as useful. 
But if we move to missive labels there is no easy way to relabel anything

First, Gmail labels can be color-coded in Missive.
Second, Missive labels serve the purpose of being able to label emails from multiple email accounts with one set of labels and also label non-email conversations, all things not achievable if we merge them.

customize the colors of Gmail / email labels just like organization labels, by clicking the little “…” when you have the label open in the left sidebar.
