Responses variables are finally here! Look for the “Add variable” button when editing your responses. Most fields of your contacts (including custom ones) should be supported, read more here: https://missiveapp.com/features/responses/variables

Etienne Lemay: Wonderful! I have already configured some of my responses, super useful time saver 💙

Etienne Lemay: This is super awesome! Are there any plans to add variable support to the email subject too?
Etienne Lemay
Jack Saunders: Yep, we’ll look into that soon. We’ll also eventually look into expanding the use of variables into signatures.

Dynamic variables for canned response will soon be available in Missive!
We believe we've developed some innovative user interface around these dynamic variables you won't find elsewhere.
When adding a variable to a canned response, you will have three options (as shown in the attached gif):
When inserting a response, ask to confirm value:
[X] Always
[ ] When no value is found
[ ] Never, even if no value is found
When choosing the option to always confirm, a popup form will open, where you will be able to confirm or edit the selected value before inserting it in the draft.
For instance, if you added a simple variable for the {{ recipient.name }} with a default value of 'there' to produce something like this:
Hi Philippe,
Hi Ron,
Hi there,
...
You will be prompted to confirm the recipient's name. And in case, there are many recipients in your email; Missive will auto-suggest other choices too:
- Philippe
- Paul
- Ron
- Philippe, Paul and Ron
Another advantage of those three different options is that you can use these variables even if you have no data source attached to the email. When doing so, these variables auto-generate a question form that your Missive users need to fill up when inserting a canned response, making sure they don't forget any vital infos/questions.
Coming soon! :)

Another great feature associated with this would be if we could use placeholders from custom fields in the contact book and use them as parameters in the urls associated with iframe custom integrations.
Bastien
Matt Goddyn: I was exactly going to comment that.
I'd add that there should be a fallback configurable so that if there is no data for the current field (i.e: Company name) we can use something else. Cascading would be nice. For example, use Cie Name, if N/A use First Name, if N/A (maybe there's isn't a contact at all) use fixed value.

Would love it. I think it could be accompanied by re-branding "Responses" as "Templates" instead. I mostly use "Responses" for new emails when I am not actually responding to anything.

This is a an awesome CRM sylt efeature... i assume you would pull from the contacts book :)

(with new contacts module) would like responses to have merge fields
Andy Morris
So I understand contacts module as of 5/10/19 is soon to be released. Would be nice since there will be contacts associated with conversations if reponses could have merge fields associated with a primary or first listed contact in to field.
Several reasons, the first being convenience. Insert first name or other paremeters into title or in body.
However I have a marketing automation tool that allows tracking based on links with inserted email paremeter or contact id in url.

I just started using Spark for my personal email and they pull this off quite well. This would really bring Missive's responses to another level.
Joseph Van Alstyne
Geoff Ball: Completely agree. This is probably the only feature I miss from Spark.

Add a name variable to responses
Svetlana Malakhova
It would be great if you could use a name variable in responses, something like {{name}}. Now we have to manually enter the name in every message that we send. A name variable would save us tons of time.
Ideally, it could be populated from a contact list (please see https://missive.canny.io/feature-requests/p/add-a-contact-list). But for now it could be a name from the email address (the first name from Copy name link).

I need this feature to go over to Missive! Everything else with this app is perfect, but this is a desperately needed feature.
Would be nice if the software gives you a warning if you try to send the email with placeholders that aren't edited. And that the placeholders displays up as nothing (blank) in the actual email if they aren't edited before sending.
Kimberley Schaefer
This feature alone would be enough to get me to move over to Missive.
